Our July mid-week outing will be to the Melbourne General Cemetery.
This cemetery has much interest for anyone interested in the history of Australia. Opening on 1st June 1853 it gradually replaced an older cemetery on the site of Victoria Markets. It is the final resting place of many famous Australians including John Pascoe Fawkner, Sir Redmond Barry, James Scullin, Sir Robert Menzies, Harold Holt, Burke and Wills and Walter Lindrum. Within its boundaries there are several heritage buildings which should provide suitable photographic subjects.
We will meet at the main entrance in College Crescent, Parkville (Melway 43, H2 or Melway 2B D4) at 10.30 AM.
Transport: by tram, take tram 19 (Coburg) from Elizabeth St to Royal Pde. Alight at stop 13 or 14 or trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 67, or 72 to Melbourne University terminus in Swanston St, then walk down Swanston St past the University Colleges to the main gates of Melbourne General Cemetery.
By car: meter parking in Lygon St or possibly within the grounds.
