Disposing of Photographic Chemicals

In conversation with a long-standing member who is no longer active and who is moving to a retirement village, he mentioned that he was worried about getting rid of his stock of chemicals.  As I am a chemist with experience concerning chemical hazards I offered to dispose of them for him.

Now, it occurs to me that this is surely not an isolated instance.  With the digital revolution almost complete there may be many club members who have switched fully to digital and as a result have cupboards full of unwanted chemicals, some of which may be toxic.

I would like to suggest that our club encourage members to clear out their stocks of unwanted chemicals.  To facilitate this we could offer a service to members who are doubtful about the correct procedure to adopt.  We have members who are chemists by profession and who would be competent to advise about which chemicals can safely be disposed to the sewer and those which would need special treatment.  I for one would be happy to assist.
