On 24 August 2009, we came together for a presentation by Tim Kohlman about exposure and development of B&W film.
Tim had done quite a bit of preparation, for example he had setup a
still life in the annex and already shot that with different exposure
settings on a number of film strips, and then developed those strips
for different times.
Tim provided a lot of theoretical background and illustrated the
concepts with the scene he set up, with graphical data on the
whiteboard, and with quite a few hands-on exercises. Part of the
practice was for participants to meter different parts of
the scene, to make prints from the strips Tim had prepared, and to
analyse the results.
I hope to document all the details in the group's visual diary, and
complete this online report with some photos taken on the night,
however for now I'd just like to say that it was a very interesting
evening with a good mixture of theory and practice. (rj)
Update: Tim forwarded me the following link to supplement the information he gave: Digital Zone System (PDF file)
There is also a good and nicely illustrated article on the practical use of the Zone System in issue 2/2009 of CiM.
Update: Barrie Bunning provided this link to more information on film testing and proper exposure.
I am aware that this is not the best place to leave such information, though I think it's still better than sending it out in email. Much preferred would be a structured online repository, and I've been thinking about using our Yahoo! group for that, however so far have not found the time to do that, nor will that probably happen anytime soon. If anyone is interested to give me a hand, please let me know. Thanks. (rj)
